FireDrums V ~ Cinco de Mayo weekend

This will be our fifth FireDrums gathering May 3,4,5,6 and we've planned more workshops for fire and flow arts, drumming, yoga and even a Reiki circle. The Santa Cruz redwoods are both incredibly energizing and yet at the same time magically peaceful and serene. This being our fourth year and the fifth gathering, we have grown a wonderful collective of volunteers to help organize and make this opportunity the best possible learning and sharing experience. Please check out the web site and tribe @ ~ http://firedrums.org ~ http://firedrums.tribe.net

This is a gallery exhibition that I am co-curating with Max Carlson in San Francisco this July . We're looking for some stellar art, so please apply. This should be a really great show. More info is available at:
http://www.simnuke.org/

You can download a form at:
http://www.simnuke.org/SimnukeCallForEntries.doc

Also, send this on to any interested persons

sasha.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Simnuke Project Gallery Show (July 28 – August 10, 2005)
http://simnuke.org

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Simnuke Project is seeking art that tells the story of the Atomic Age.

On July 16, 1945 at 05:29:45 local time (Mountain War Time), a team of scientists reached the culmination of the Manhattan Project, the first test of a nuclear weapon. The event was code-named "Trinity".

On July 16, 2005, at 05:29:45 local time, a team of artists and engineers will commemorate the 60-year anniversary of Trinity by simulating the look and feel of the detonation of a nuclear device.

A gallery show at Rx Gallery (http://www.rxgallery.com/) in San Francisco, California July 28 – August 10 will accompany this event, allowing artists working in a variety of mediums to delve into the implications of atomic weapons that have pervaded our lives for the last 60 years. Artists of all backgrounds are invited to participate in the Simnuke Gallery Show.

The immediate goal of the exhibit is to create a venue for art that tells the story of the Atomic Age. The medium is unspecified: the nuclear age itself is the binding theme for the show.

In the 60 years since that world-changing moment that was the Trinity detonation, the Bomb has permeated the collective consciousness, shaped generations, economies, and nations, and within the last decade almost completely disappeared. Children today barely know the fears of the nuclear age. Ask most anyone on the street what he or she would do if there was an impending nuclear attack and they would likely stare at you blankly, not knowing what that would mean. The Simnuke Project seeks to illustrate the needless threat of such limitless, destructive energy in the hope that no one will ever again experience the devastation of the real thing.

From Trinity to modern day “bunker busters”, nearly everyone has been affected by the fears, the myths, and the realities of the nuclear threat. As ever more countries become nuclear-enabled and as the United States makes sounds of restarting its nuclear weapon development, it is imperative that we become knowledgeable about the risks of nuclear arms and power.

The ultimate goal of the project is to create an occasion to bring closer and examine the shadow nuclear weapons have cast on billions of lives. Bringing the events long forgotten after 60 years into the present is a tool for healing – by creating a close connection with the destructive nature and history of nuclear technologies, peace will become the higher option.

The intended audience for the message of Simnuke crosses age groups and demographics. Some will directly experience the commemoration itself in the desert. Others will visit the gallery. Many more will read or see media about the project and reflect on the Atomic Age.

All entries will be pre-screened for eligibility by curators; however, not all entries will be in the show.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 6, 2005.

The Simnuke Project is supported by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (http://www.wagingpeace.org/), the Nuclear Policy Research Institute (http://www.nuclearpolicy.org/), and Tree New Mexico (http://www.treenm.com/). The Simnuke Project is made possible with the fiscal sponsorship of the Cloud Factory Collective for the Arts (http://www.cloudfactoryarts.org/), a 501(c)3 organization.

FireDrums Gathering

Many fire friends have been asking if we'll have another Fire Arts and Drumming Gathering.
Last year we gathered at Pismo Beach by the Dunes.
It was the first gathering and though we had 'some issues' it was a very kool time and we made new friends and learned new moves and had a kool weekend on a beautiful beach.
Pismo was chosen because of it's reletively central location and proximity to Northern and Southern California.
However the loud 'off roader' surroundings were not quite the vibe we were looking for.
I had hoped that Song Dog ranch would have worked out their legal issues but it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon.
So the only other option seems to be Red White and Blue Beach near Santa Cruz.
Though there seems to be concern about it reopening this season, we're keeping our hopes up.
This is further north and closer for the SF and Bay area posse, but obviously a bit further drive for the LA and southern CA people.
I'm hoping to organize a charter bus that will make a few stops beginning in Orange County / Anaheim area, then thru Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley and possibly a Santa Barbara area pick up point.

That's to be worked out, but the main thing is to schedule a date that works for as many people as possible.
Mid April seemed to be getting warm enough for most of us last year.
So if a particular weekend in APRIL has something going on, please let us know so we can lock down a date that doesn't overlap another 'happening'.
This time we plan to include a sound system as well as the hand drumming.

The idea of the FireDrums gathering is to bring together as many fire artists and hand precussionists together to meet and share techniques and have an amazing spin jam weekend.
It isn't meant to be an 'event' and we 'will do everything possible' to keep it intimate and personal and inexpensive for everyone.

Please contact me or send your ideas and responses to the FireDrums Tribe
http://firedrums.tribe.net/

peace, love and light,
and may your fires burn forever bright

Pismo - A little help please

The interest in the Pismo gathering has grown considerably.
There are people coming from all over and that’s a really kool thing.
I’m thinking of what we can do to make the weekend as fun, convenient & safe as possible.
There’s no tickets or revenue income so it’s up to us to create the best environment we can for ourselves.

PLEASE ADDRESS ALL REPLIES TO THIS POST ON THE PISMO TRIBE SITE.
http://pismofiredrums.tribe.net/

If you haven’t made reservations yet, it is a good idea to make them as soon as possible.
http://www.reserveamerica.com/jsp/commonpage.jsp?goto=/usa/ca/ocea/newindex.html is the site for Oceano Dunes.

(see the “Guidelines & info post for this and other important info)
http://www.tribe.net/tribe/servlet/template/pub%2Ctribes%2CViewThread.vm?threadid=06265169-8c59-4ba8-9bd2-6bd74bd2b043&tribeid=631f5b3f-15ef-48af-87f9-a530cb282f5d

Here is the direct link for Pismo / Oceano Dunes that has additional camping info, tide charts and other general info;
http://www.ohv.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=1207

I’ll be renting an 18’ camping trailer from a local supplier to act as a base station.
http://www.luv2camp.com/ in case any of you want to go in together on one.

I’m also purchasing & will set up silt fencing in segments around the center circle for fire performance, drumming, dancing, frolicking & whatever group experience we conjure up.
We’ll set up our camp around the center circle in a ‘U’ shape that will extend away from the water so that we can expand the camp as more people arrive.

On that note, several people have mentioned they will have there own trailers there as well.
The wind is generally from the northwest (so the locals have told me) so we’ll create the ‘bottom’ of the ‘U’ with our trailers to help establish our camp while providing a wind break as well.

The ‘base’ trailer is well equipped but does not have a generator.

So here’s my wish list & feel free to add your requests and ideas to the list as well.
I’m sure with the numbers that are coming, we can bring a really great vibe to this gathering.

1) Someone has offered to loan me a small generator but a back up genie would be helpful.

2) Sound system; Someone earlier offered to bring a system but in the barrage of emails I can’t find it @ the moment.
We’ll be drumming on our own sometimes but that won’t carry us thru the entire weekend.
If there’s a DJ in the crowd it will add to the vibe & we can still drum & spin to the mixes as well.

3) Burn barrels; a few would be nice to have around the perimeter of the circle.

4) Tiki torches and lamps to outline the circle.

5) Lots of wood; We’ll be having a fire pit & hopefully a second if there’s enough burnables.
Every bit helps & adds up. If everyone brings a little something it will be a huge help.

6) Trash bags; Most of us already know & live by a “ LEAVE NO TRACE” attitude.
The area is home to several ‘protected’ species of birds and other animals as well as being simply, a clean environment for ‘everyone’ to enjoy.
It can & probably will get windy at times so don’t leave things lying around that can blow away.
It really doesn’t matter where or who the trash / moop came from; clean as you go.
If we all bring and keep trash bags handy, we can leave this a beautiful beach for everyone & be welcome back to do this again.
Let’s all do everything we can to leave the area as pristine & beautiful as possible.

7) Tables; a few tables to set up out side the base trailer & at the fuel dump.

8) Fire extinguishers; I have one & I’m hoping to borrow more but we need to have them stationed & available in several well marked areas around the circle perimeter.

9) Large chest; I have a 4’x2’x2’ portable tool chest to ‘help’ protect and ‘temporarily’ store fuel at the fuel dump but we MUST have a well marked, safe, designated NO BURN area FOR ALL FUELS. Any additional protective, ventable enclosures would be appreciated.

10) Buckets or small tubs to keep clean wet safety towels.

11) Glow sticks; I’ll bring some but we can use more to help designate & mark areas like the fuel dump.

12) Anyone who wants to take still photos or has a video camcorder (preferably mini DV, but whatever) there’ll be some kool moments. And if we can collect enough footage, I’ll put together a video of the gathering.

13) The idea has been presented that perhaps a specific web page for the gathering would be helpful as there are some people not on Tribe or in case the Tribe site goes down.
I don’t have a personal web site and never set one up, so any helpful hints on web design would be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE ADDRESS ALL REPLIES TO THE PISMO SITE.
http://pismofiredrums.tribe.net/

SAFETY IS PRIORITY ! While this is a casual fun, campout, hangout gathering, we must all be aware AT ALL TIMES that the person next to you may not have the same experience and safety knowledge as you.
We will have safety guidelines in effect for the gathering & will make safety announcements at the beginning and during the weekend.

If you have not read the post about “Guidelines & info” it is IMPORTANT READING that will help everyone to have a safe, trouble free and great experience.
http://www.tribe.net/tribe/servlet/template/pub%2Ctribes%2CViewThread.vm?threadid=06265169-8c59-4ba8-9bd2-6bd74bd2b043&tribeid=631f5b3f-15ef-48af-87f9-a530cb282f5d

Remember that this is a group experience and as such we have the consideration of not only ourselves, but the other beach / dunes goers, wildlife, and the possibility of returning and continuing to enjoy future gatherings here and elsewhere.

This is only the beginning !
peace and burning bright, luvin, huggin, smillin, vibes to all !

The weekend is getting closer & we'd like to get an idea of how many of you are coming.
It will add tremendously to everyones experience to have as many troops as possible perform in the 'center circle'.

Pismo / Oceano Dunes gathering info

Pismo / Oceano Dunes info

April 16, 17, 18, (the weekend after Easter) we'll be gathering @ Oceano Dunes (Pismo Beach).

pismofiredrums.tribe.net

I recently flew up and scouted the area from the air, and it's a really great place for us to have the gathering.

I've also heard positive things from several other people who have been there for other gatherings.

I spoke at length with the rangers about the regulations there and fires and fire spinning are allowed.

There are restrooms at several locations along the beach and even a couple of places back in the "dunes"

Access is easy and at low tide ( I'll post the tide times later) you can , and I have personally done this myself , drive any normal car on the beach as long as you stay off the dry sand.

We have the obvious choice to camp on the beach or we can trek a bit back into the dunes. It would be kool to make our camp further back in the dunes and be a bit more private, but you'll need 4 wheel drive in the soft sand.

There is a guy that takes people on tours of the dunes that we could throw a few $$ to and he'll get us wherever we want to camp. (anybody 4wd equipped?)

Also there is an outfit that has 18ft fully equipped camping trailers that sleep 6 people.

They are $95 per nite and if you don't have towing capabilities, they'll drop it off and pick it up where ever you want on the beach for $50.
They have a furnished kitchen, shower, toilet, heater, and awning.

Can't imagine doing this and certainly not suggesting it, but, there are also some reasonable motels very near by if you're really not into camping. (definitely not a suggestion, just covering as many options as possible)

You can obviously set up camp wherever you like, but it works really well to set up in a big circle. Parking the vehicles on the outside provides a wind break with the center area for an open fire pit and spinning and drumming.

It's is a $10 per vehicle (not per person) charge to camp in the dunes. There's no other charge than that, but there is a big fine if you don't have an over nite pass.

I know many of you have already joined firedrums which was originally created to be the Pismo gathering info site.
But that site quickly evolved into a more general events and happenings site and is serving that purpose well.

So now we've started this site specifically for the Pismo gathering.
I know there are many more people interested in this gathering so PLEASE let everyone you can know about this tribe and take a minute to join.

And if you have any info, suggestions or ideas, please post them to this site.
